I remember my mother calling and wandering "if that lady that just did the news was having a stroke". I did not see it at the time, I was watching NBC but had left the room when this aired. It was all over the news the next day that she was drunk. I don't think she ever appeared again, I think NBC suspended her. And I remember just a couple of weeks later hearing she had died.

I loved these pieces from NBC news. Jessica always made me feel that news events were being reported with the upmost of care and just the right amount of gravity. It was comforting to see her every evening and of course I too thought she was suffering from some kind of ailment on-air in this segment. I would never have dreamed drugs or alcohol. Never. I still think of her often over 20 yrs later! No other news anchor can touch her screen presence or talent. Thank God for Youtube!
