Cherry Poppin' Daddies - 'Zoot Suit Riot' (alternate video)

Uploaded by: Skibz778
Video Description:
This is the first music video to the single 'Zoot Suit Riot' by America's finest rock/swing/ska band, the Cherry Poppin' Daddies. Directed by Isaac Camner.
Backstory: This video was filmed to promote the independent release of the band's 1997 all-swing compilation album 'Zoot Suit Riot' (CPD had already released three indie albums of rock, funk and swing). Following the album's indie success, the band was picked up by major label Mojo Records, 'Zoot' was nationally distributed, and a newer video was filmed.
In my opinion, I much rather prefer this video. I like Steve's over-the-top expressions and the "swing" atmosphere is pretty neat. However, I'm glad they reshot it for the masses and gave it a bit more 'Cherry Poppin' Daddies' atmosphere (the evil clown, the goat head, the guy licking a foot...let's see the squeaky-clean, retro-revisionist cheeseballs like Brian Setzer or Big Bad Voodoo Daddy try THAT!); it really set them apart from the other swing revival bands (as it rightfully should have, seeing as the Daddies were never a "swing band" to begin with).

Believe it or not, swing dancing is one of the best dances of all time. It requires a lot of energy, a good pair of dancers, and most of all it requires the faster pace of music, like this song to make it really fun.

Just an interesting note: do any of y'all know what the 'Zoot Suit Riot' was? Well, for the uneducated it was a horrible violent attack on hispanic Americans in the 40s. I mean it's a good song, but it's like jamming out to a song about lynching negroes in the ole south. Seriously.

That's kind of the Daddies' staple: they contrast serious topics with bright, peppy music ('Drunk Daddy', for instance, is about child abuse). They're not making light of such subjects...songs such as these usually have a message, and juxtaposing such content against a happy backdrop really adds more punch to what they're saying. CPD had a lot of substance in their work, but the whole "happy, swinging, 1940s" image they flaunted really sort of washed over it...

If it wasn't for that "hack" Brian Setzer, these guys would have had no success, you idiot. Brian Setzer first brought back rockabilly in the 80's with the Stray Cats, then he brought back swing. MORON
By 'hack', I mean ... ( 1 week ago by Skibz778)
By 'hack', I mean Brian Setzer and the like contributed to the demise of the swing revival by way of their retro gimmickry and the preferral for style over substance: constant cover songs, a happy "swing, daddy-o!" attitude and no sense of musical evolution, trying harder to recapture the sound and image of the 40s rather than actually EVOLVING swing: updating it with modern rock sensibilities, like the ska revival did. This is why swing fizzled out and ska still has a strong following.
CPD, although they ... ( 1 week ago by Skibz778)
CPD, although they weren't perfect and sometimes catered to the same retro gimmickry, at least attempted musical evolution by way of fusing swing with ska and rock (just listen to the rhythm section), and by utilizing lyrical themes that weren't simple novelties (child abuse, violence, sexuality, etc.). It's also important to note CPD's adherance to originality, as they only recorded ONE big band cover song ('Come Back to Me'), and it was actually from the 1960s.
It is most ... ( 1 week ago by Skibz778)
It is most important to mention, though, that CPD is NOT A SWING BAND, and thus don't owe their existence to anyone. All of their albums, save for 'Zoot Suit Riot', have as much swing as they do rock, funk, ska, punk, metal, country and pop. They just happened to become popular for their swing on a fluke...it wasn't something they were trying to be a part of (in fact, they tried to DISTANCE themselves from the swing scene).
If I may continue, ... ( 1 week ago by Skibz778)
If I may continue, by the time BSO released their first album, CPD was already an award-winning, nationally touring act, and by the time 'Dirty Boogie' was released, CPD was already on a major label and had radio play with 'Zoot Suit Riot' (however, the Squirrel Nut Zippers' "Hot" was a hit before either of them).
I do like Stray Cats, though. Good stuff.

I have since changed 'hack' to 'cheeseball', which I find more appropriate. My point was, as most people tend to blend all of the '98 swing bands together, I was accentuating CPD's effort at distinguishing themselves from their contemporaries: if not by their lyrics or their other non-swing songs, than at least by their image. Their second video had such surreal imagry as evil clowns, vampires, guys licking feet...not something you'd find with swingin', squeaky-clean Setzer.

No problem. See, I grew up with alt rock and grunge, so I'm just accustomed to having deeper, darker music/lyrics....doing Louis Prima covers is something that doesn't quite register with me.
Then again, Setzer is headlining the Hollywood Bowl and CPD are playing Joe's Coffee Shack, so there must be something I'm not getting. O_o
