I absolutely agree with Wilbon. Mascots contribute to nothing but trouble. I'll take the half-naked cheerleaders over mascots anyday.

Umm, yes they do. His name is Lucky.
What they don't realize is that mascots are a huge marketing tool. They're a team ambassador, they drum up excitement for the season, do community appearances, and entertain children. Trust me, they're probably not there for the people that don't like them. This guy is just ridiculous. I'm not a fan of Steely, but come on. Get rid of all mascots? how about get rid of crappy sports commentary? This guy's an idiot.

He's the official mascot for the Celtics. Doesn't wear a fuzzy costume, but is still acknowledged by the team as the official mascot.

...Steeley McBeam is the coolest fucking name for a mascot ever. At least if the team is named Steelers. It's a name I would have come up with.
Probably belongs on a arena league steelers team though, heh. It's a little silly for an NFL team.

They drum up excitement? For anybody under age 8 maybe. They are a symptom of marketing gone wild, the idea that the game isn't enough to keep the fans' interest, so there has to be constant noise and movement to keep people awake.

Unfortunately for alot of teams, that's the truth. The lack of performance on the court or field leads to lower attendance, and they need something to draw the crowd. Take the Tampa Bay Rays for example. Up until this year, their mascot was the sole reason fans attended the game.
