Pakistan to Elect New President

Tomorrow members of Pakistan's parliament will elect a replacement for former president Pervez Musharraf. And the election looks set to be a three-way heat between the country's three main parties. However the widower of assassinated former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto may have the edge.
STORY:
Asif Ali Zardari, the leader the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) looks likely to win this weekend's vote.
But there may be doubts over Zardari's suitability for a role that would allow him to dismiss governments and appoint leaders of the country's powerful military.
[Zahid Hussain, Political Analyst]:
"I think he may have the vote but not the confidence of the people; and I think he also does not have the confidence of other political parties. Being president, he will be a very controversial person."
Zardari was propelled into the political limelight after Bhutto's assassination last December. But he was once tainted by corruption allegations. But these charges and political battles will have no bearing on Saturday's presidential election.
And on the streets of Islamabad, Pakistanis are more concerned with rising prices and spiraling violence.
[Sarfraz Moghul, President, Traders Union]:
"We do not care who becomes President. All we want is that whoever it is, for God's sake, he should try to improve the situation in this country. People here are miserable. He should take care of their problems and their sufferings."
The Pakistani rupee has lost more than a fifth of its value against the U.S. dollar this year, and the stock market is down more than a third since January. Many are hoping the economy will improve when Zardari is elected.

| An economist at a local TV revealed that Zardari/Ruling Class of Pakistanis has above $150 billion abroad of which if they bring back only 25% economic instability can end & Pakistan can develop at a faster pace. He totally forgot that this money is thrown out of Pakistans National Economy. West loans it back on heavy terms to create financial instability in Pakistan & not to stabilize it. West claims to have invested this fund here but a poor Pakistani doesnt even get a single penny out of it |
